What is Reading STARS?

Reading STARS is an intergenerational tutoring program that pairs older adult volunteers with students in grades K-3. The program aims to motivate children who aren’t reading at grade level to become better readers, while providing older adults with meaningful community service.

Why is the library offering this program?

LA County Library is able to offer tutoring for free to the students who need it, helping to break the economic barrier for private tutoring. The library also provides a safe space for after-school learning.

Why grades K-3?

These are the critical years for ensuring reading at grade level by Grade 3. Kids who can’t read at grade level by Grade 4 are four times less likely to graduate from high school.
