Adopted by the State Legislature in 2001, the first César E. Chávez Day in the State of California was celebrated in recognition of César Chávez as an American hero - a leader who represented the values of hard work, democracy, justice, education, service to others, family, and respect as president of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO.
In the celebration of this American hero, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared the first César E. Chávez Community Service Week, March 25-31,2002. This year César E. Chávez Community Service Week will be observed from March 24-31,2008 with a number of celebrations and activities planned in tribute to César Chávez's core values, service to others and the welfare of working families.
