A Brief Look at Compton's Music History

With the success of the 2015 film "Straight Outta Compton" and the rise of Grammy winning rapper and proud Compton native Kendrick Lamar, Compton is having a huge pop culture moment. Long considered a famous "creative cluster" in the evolution of rap and hip hop, Compton holds a rich and storied place in music history.

Compton was the birthplace of the late rapper Eazy E and also the birthplace of rapper turned entertainment mogel Andre Young, better known as Dr. Dre. Eazy E and Dr. Dre collaborated to form what would become a seminal group in the history of hip hop, NWA. NWA’s debut album “Straight Outta Compton”, released in 1988, would leave a lasting legacy on hip hop and spoke a truth that was previously unexplored in popular music.

Compton Turns the Tables was supported in whole or in part by the US Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
