History
Dedicated on June 13, 1970, the Alondra Library was opened with a collection
of nearly 15,000 volumes. The ground was broken for the Library on Jan 14,
1970. Built by the City of Norwalk, the library was to place a special
emphasis on Norwalk's Mexican-American heritage and culture. Funds for
the first Spanish language books were donated by the Spanish club, El Circulo
Español, from Cerritos College. The library was the second in the city
and would serve the population of the southern area of the city which includes
ten elementary and middle schools.
Collection
The library's collection totals 58,325, 53 magazine and newspaper
subscriptions, 3,964 audio recordings, 3,693 video cassettes and a pamphlet
collection. The library offers material in English, Chinese, Korean,
Spanish and Vietnamese.
Services
The library offers reference services,public access Internet computers,
online library catalogs, reader's advisory,
children's programs, a coin-operated
photocopier and Friends of the Library
rental collections.
Facilities
This 7,056 square foot building is located two blocks east of Pioneer
Boulevard and is next to the Norwalk Social Services Center. Alondra is
the smaller of the two libraries in Norwalk, with the
Norwalk Library being the largest.
