History
The Compton Library branch of the Los Angeles County Free library opened its doors in July of 1913, the 11th branch of today's County of Los Angeles Public Library. The library was located in a storefront building near Main and Tamarind Streets and was later moved to the Compton Union High School at 212 S. Acacia Street. In 1925 a separate building was erected in the City Hall Park at 123 W. Almond Street, where it remained until 1974, when the current facility was dedicated at 240 W. Compton Boulevard.

Collection
The Compton Library currently has over 104,000 books and magazines, and 13,000 audiovisual materials, including videos, DVD's, cassettes and CD's. Specialty collections include 16mm films on African American history and the Multicultural Collection highlighting African American, Latino and Samoan cultures.

Services
The Compton Library offers adult, children's and Spanish language materials, reference service, a Literacy Center, a Homework Center, 2 study rooms (3 person capacity), public computers with Internet access and word processing capabilities, seasonal family programming, and a public multipurpose room. Special services offered in the Literacy Center include one-to-one basic literacy tutoring, English as a Second Language (ESL) group instruction, and self-help instruction on audiocassettes, videocassettes and computer-based training. The staffed Homework Center has four computer workstations with Internet access, word processing capability, and various games for young children.

Facilities
Compton Library is a 20,000 square foot facility on a 1.5 acre lot, located in the Compton Civic Center.
