History
El Monte, the End of the Santa Fe Trail, was also home to the famous Gay's
Lion Farm in the 30s, where that roaring lion on the familiar MGM logo came
from. The El Monte Library was founded in 1890, and joined the Los Angeles
County Public Library in 1913. It has been at its present location since 1967.
Collection
The library's book collection totals approximately 106,366 volumes.
The collection includes 74 magazines and newspapers in English,
Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese, 10,534 audio and video recordings,
a special collection of telephone directories, and collections in
Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese languages. The Cesar Chavez
Self-Improvement Collection for Job Training and Career Development
includes civil service exam books, career and vocation guides,
business directories, and resume, interview and job skills training
books and videos.
Services
Services include an online public access catalog, three multimedia computer
workstations for children, one Internet computer, as well as adults, children's
and school programs, a coin-operated typewriter and a coin-operated photocopy
machine.
Facilities
The library with an area of 12,200 square feet, features an adult area, a
children's section, a periodical area, and a meeting room with a seating
capacity of 49.
