History
The first library in Lawndale – one of the earliest branches of the County of Los Angeles Public Library – opened December 26, 1913 at the corner of Railroad Ave. and Market St. (now Hawthorne Blvd. and 147th St.). The current Lawndale Library opened to great fanfare March 18, 2009 after 52 years of serving the community in a 3500 sq. ft. building next door.
Collection
The collection consists of approximately 80,000 items, including books, audio books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines. Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese materials are available. The International Children’s Collection consists of hundreds of picture books and chapter books in dozens of languages donated by countries around the world.
Services
The Library offers reference assistance, electronic databases and other online information, public access Internet computers, WiFi, a Career Center, Technology Lab, and library programs for all ages. The Friends of the Lawndale Library sponsor a DVD Rental Collection featuring new releases and an ongoing used book sale.
Facilities
17,300 sq. ft. on one floor. Subdivisions (glass artwork) by Anne Marie Karlsen.
