History
The Malibu Library, located in the Malibu Civic Center Complex,
was established in 1970 by the County of Los Angeles Public Library.
Prior to 1970, a bookmobile provided library service to the Malibu
community serving residents in Topanga Canyon and along the Pacific
Coast Highway.
Collection
The current collection includes 92,466 books; 82 magazines and
newspaper subscriptions; 6,491 audio recordings; 5,117 video recordings;
and other special materials such as telephone directories, pamphlets,
California topographic maps, and local history. In addition to the main
collection, the library houses three special collections: the Arkel Erb
Memorial Mountaineering Collection, established in 1980 that focuses on
information West of the Rockies; the Peter A. Horn Senior Citizen
Collection, established in 1996, which includes books, magazines, audio
visual materials; and the Sean Matthews Collection, established in 1998,
which includes children's fiction and non-fiction picture books as
well as children's books-on-tape.
Services
Services to adults and children include reference and
readers' advisory, toddler and
preschool storytimes and Summer Reading programs for older children.
The library also has a coin-operated copier, word processor, and
public access Internet computers.
Facilities
The 16,530 square foot library features an adult reading area; a
children's area; a meeting room (available for a fee) which accommodates
a maximum of 125 people; and ample free parking.
