History
The Montebello Library was established in January 1914 and was first located
in the local newspaper office. In 1916 the library moved to the local post
office. In 1924 the library moved to its first separate building. Montebello
was the first city in the county to build a library with funds raised by a
bond issue ($30,000). The building was erected in July 1930 at 115 So. Taylor
Avenue. It served the community for 36 years before the library's current
building was dedicated on October 20th, 1966.
Collection
The library's holdings include 215,664 books, 231 magazine and
newspaper subscriptions, 6,454 audio-recordings, 7,391 videocassettes,
4,800 pamphlets and some computer software. Other special materials
are telephone books, college catalogs, local history, topographic maps
and picture files. The County Library's
Asian Pacific Resource
Center (APRC) is also located
at the library with books, magazines, newspapers, microfilm, 16 mm films and
picture files.
Services
The following services are available to customers: online library
catalog, public access Internet computers, children's programs; microfilm/fiche
readers; coin-operated copiers and 1 typewriter; public meeting room
(available on a rental basis).
Facilities
The library, with an area of 41,000 square feet, features the following major
areas: an adult section; a separate children's area; a young adult corner; a
separate Asian Pacific Resource Center section and a meeting room with a
capacity of 135. The library has two entrances, one on West Beverly Blvd.
and one on West Victoria Avenue. Parking spaces are available on both
sides, a separate underground parking garage is also available to the
public during the library's open hours.
