History
The Walnut Library was founded in March 1916 in the original Walnut Elementary
School. It was maintained there until 1964 when bookmobile service was initiated
to better serve the area. When the Walnut population increased, a 3,250 square
foot rental storefront at 134 N. Pierre Street was opened in 1970.Ê The library
has been at the present location since February 13, 1985.
Collection
The collection includes about 100,171 books, 87 magazine and newspaper
subscriptions, 3,400 video recordings and 5,070 audio recordings. Materials
are available in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Japanese and Vietnamese
for adults and children. Special collections include selected college
catalogs, telephone directories, large print books and pamphlets. The
library is also a depository for BKK and Spadra landfill reports.
Services
Walnut Library staff provides reference and
reader's advisory service, Internet
computers, weekly
preschool storytime on Friday at 10:30 a.m., evening storytime on Wednesday
at 7:00 p.m., and other children's programs.
Facilities
The library has 10,727 square feet, with a meeting room capacity of 42
seats, 3 study rooms, and a Friends of the
Library Bookstore. Special equipment include a photocopy machine, a
coin-operated typewriter, and two public Internet computers.
