Special Collections

Special collections are unique library materials that address the diverse interests and needs of the communities within Los Angeles County. To find out more about these collections, contact the Libraries listed below.

Arkel Erb Memorial Mountaineering Collection Collected by Ruth and Arkel Erb over a twenty-year period, the collection consists of over 3,300 books, magazines and maps and is one of the most complete mountaineering collections in the U.S. It includes materials on mountaineering in North America, the Andes, the Alps, Himalayas, Great Britain, New Zealand, Japan and Africa as well as related subjects such as caving, canoeing, backpacking, cooking, wilderness travel and survival techniques, and a few fiction titles relating to mountaineering. Located at the Malibu Library.
Edmund D. Edelman Public Policy Collection Established in 1994, this collection serves the needs of those involved in public policy in local government and the private sector. The collection is named in honor of Supervisor Edmund D. Edelman in recognition of his more than 20 years of service to Los Angeles County. Located at the Norwalk Library.
Japanese Relocation Camp Collection The collections includes books, newspapers, journals, and theses related to the World War II internment camp experience. Located at the Gardena Mayme Dear Memorial Library.
Judaica Collection The Judaica Collection contains materials on the history and culture of the Jewish people with a focus on the Holocaust, including works of fiction by Jewish authors. Located at the Culver City Julian Dixon Library

A smaller collection of materials focuses on the Jewish Holocaust, including fiction and nonfiction survivors' stories. Located at the Agoura Hills Library.

Nautical Collection The nautical collection includes materials on boating, boat repair, and navigation. This collection started when the library opened in 1976. The collection has been cited in L.A. Weekly as the "best nautical library." The Department of Beaches and Harbors and the Department of Regional Planning send materials to this library. Located at the Lloyd Taber-Marina del Rey Library.
The Anthony Quinn Collection Donated to the Library by the world-renowned actor and artist, the collection contains over 3,000 photographs, memorabilia, scripts, videotape recordings of television appearances, galleys from Mr. Quinn's autobiography, The Original Sin, and a portion of his personal art collection. Located at the Anthony Quinn Library.
Ron Shipton HIV Information Center The Ron Shipton HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) Information Center was established in 1989 as a joint venture between the County of Los Angeles Public Library and the City of West Hollywood. Its provides accurate and accessible materials regarding education, etiology, prevention, transmission, epidemiology, treatment methods, and legal issues related to HIV-AIDS. Located at the West Hollywood Library.
