A special collection is a concentration of materials in a narrowly defined subject or topical area. These collections vary in size. They may be integrated or physically separated from the host collection. The collections reflect retrospective collection building and on-going acquisition of newly published materials.

Rose Diaz Pinan Reading Aloud Collection |
After the death of Rose Diaz Pinan in September 1981, the County of Los Angeles Public Library learned that Mrs. Pinan had bequeathed funds totalling over $64,000 to the Library for the purpose of purchasing books for children. In her honor, reading aloud collections were developed to be circulated from each of the community libraries of the County of Los Angeles Public Library. |

Arkel Erb Memorial Mountaineering Collection |
One of the most complete mountaineering collections in the U.S. is housed at the Malibu Library. Collected by Ruth and Arkel Erb over a twenty-year period, the collection contains over 3,300 books, magazines and maps. This collection includes materials on mountaineering in North America, the Andes, the Alps, Himalayas, Great Britain, New Zealand, Japan and Africa as well as related subjects such as caving, canoeing, backpacking, cooking and wilderness travel and survival techniques. Edmund D. Edelman Public Policy Collection |
Established in 1994, this collection at the Norwalk Library is designed to serve the informational and educational needs of those involved in implementing public policy in local government and in the private sector. This collection has been named in honor of Supervisor Edmund D. Edelman in recognition of his more than 20 years of service to the people of Los Angeles County. Supervisor Edelman has maintained a long held interest in public policy issues and concerns on a number of levels. Japanese Relocation Camp Collection |
This collection is located at the Gardena Mayme Dear Memorial Library. The materials are in both microfilm and paper format. There are about 100 theses and 80 newspaper and periodical titles dealing specifically with the World War II internment camp experience. Judaica Collection |
Housed at the Culver City Julian Dixon Library, the Judaica Collection contains materials on the history and culture of the Jewish people with a focus on the Holocaust. Many works of fiction by Jewish authors are also available. Phone (310) 559-1676. A smaller collection of materials focusing on the Jewish Holocaust is located at the Agoura Hills Library. This collection contains books on the Jewish Holocaust during World War II and includes survivor's stories in fiction and nonfiction adult and children's books. Phone (818) 889-2278. |

Nautical Collection |
The Lloyd Taber-Marina del Rey Library houses a nautical collection that has materials on subjects such as boating, boat repair and navigation. This special collection started when the library opened in 1976. The collection has been cited in L.A. Weekly as the "best nautical library". The Anthony Quinn Collection |
This collection is housed at the Anthony Quinn Library. Donated to the Library by the world-renowned actor and artist, the collection contains over 3,000 items including photographs, memorabilia, scripts, videotape recordings of television appearances, galleys from Mr. Quinn's autobiography, The Original Sin, and a portion of his personal art collection. Ron Shipton HIV Information Center |
The Ron Shipton HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) Information Center was established at the West Hollywood Library in 1989 as a joint venture of the County of Los Angeles Public Library and the City of West Hollywood. Its purpose is to provide accurate and accessible materials regarding education, etiology, prevention, transmission, epidemiology, treatment methods, and legal issues related to HIV-AIDS.
